Marcus Carline

Marcus Carline is a composer based out of Long Beach, CA with wide interests and influences. He graduated from Cal State, Long Beach in 2016 with a B.M. in Jazz Studies (Vocal Performance) and Composition. As such, jazz heavily influences his compositional work, particularly in the use of extended harmony and the desire for more improvisational thinking from performers. His compositions have been performed by professional ensembles such as C3LA, Glass City Singers, Friction Quartet, Los Angeles Electroacoustic Ensemble, and Los Angeles Percussion Quartet. The performance degree also helps him as a commercial composer, having written for short films, animations, and video games. But having jazz as a foundation hasn't stopped him from branching out into minimalism, modernism, postmodernism, modal, atonal, and electronically processed music. As a performer, he is currently a section leader with Choral Arts Initiative, a vocal percussionist and music director with Westbeat, an active member of C3LA, a member of Tonality, and a cofounder/performer with the Los Angeles Electroacoustic Ensemble. In a non-musical capacity, he's a hobbyist meadmaker, MLS fan, and has a pet gecko named Fern.
